An aerial acrobat died after falling 15 to 20 feet and landing headfirst during a circus-like performance.

Authorities were investigating how 33-year-old Jose Angel Vera of San Diego died during the performance Tuesday at a golf tournament.

Police Sgt. Mark Clark said Vera fell during stunt in which he unraveled his body from a sash while suspended in the air. There was no safety net.

Vera died about 35 minutes after falling on his head.

Clark said witnesses are "absolutely stunned" by the fatal fall during the Aerial Artistry performance.

He said investigators do not suspect foul play or criminal issues.
