Ethiopian police have arrested a suspect in the death of a 25-year-old American diplomat, officials said Wednesday.

Demsash Hailu, a spokesman for Ethiopia's federal police, said the suspect was arrested Tuesday in the country's remote north.

"He had information and evidence," he told The Associated Press. He gave no further details.

Brian Adkins was found dead in his home earlier this month in the capital, Addis Ababa. He was serving as a consular officer at the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia.

He was a 2001 graduate of Whitehall-Yearling High School in suburban Columbus, Ohio, winning a four-year scholarship to George Washington University in Washington, where he also attended graduate school.

Ethiopian officials have released little information about Adkins' death, except that it appeared to be the result of foul play.

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Addis Ababa did not immediately return calls for comment.
