One person was killed and a second seriously injured in a helicopter crash Tuesday on the North Carolina campus of the private security contractor Xe, authorities said.

Currituck County spokesman Randall Edwards said the person was pronounced dead at the crash scene. He said the injured person aboard was taken to a hospital in nearby Chesapeake, Va.

Xe is the security and training company formerly known as Blackwater Worldwide.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the small helicopter crashed Tuesday afternoon when the aircraft’s skid caught on an object and flipped over. She said earlier that one person was hurt.

A Xe spokeswoman says this is the first serious injury in the 11-year history of the company’s training facility, which is about 30 minutes south of Norfolk, Va.
