Three tornadoes barreled through east central Alabama, destroying one church and damaging another over the weekend. Ten homes and a school were also torn up by the twisters.
The National Weather Service says the system has snapped or ripped hundreds of trees from the ground and flipped an 18-wheeler. The semi came to rest in the highway's median.
There have been several minor injuries reported.
A Salem church was destroyed by the storm.
Tornado warnings for parts of central Georgia and South Carolina were also issued early Sunday.
