Mexican authorities say two U.S. tourists drowned when a wave swept them out to sea in the Baja California peninsula.

Local Civil Protection Director Francisco Cota says the two men were fishing in shallow waters in front of the Sheraton Hotel in the resort town of Cabo San Lucas when a strong wave swept them further out to sea.

Cota says a woman managed to pull one of the men to shore but could not save his life. The Mexican navy recovered the other man's body.

Cota says the two men were retirees, one of them from Ohio and the other from Arizona.

The U.S. Embassy declined to identify the two men because next of kin had not been notified.
