Johannesburg's harsh reality

NBC reporter Sue Burt reports on the shantytowns around Johannesburg, South Africa.

Hundreds of thousands of people in South Africa have left homes in rural villages to flock to Johannesburg and other big cities, lured by the prospect of a better life for their family. They hope to find jobs and homes, but for most, the reality falls far short of their dreams. Unable to accommodate the new arrivals, Johannesburg has seen squatter’s shacks and shantytowns spring up almost everywhere vacant land is found. MSNBC’s Robert Hood and I set out to see for ourselves just what life is like in these new shantytowns.
