Head down Ho, make right at Hum

State Farm Insurance has listed the top five funniest named intersections in the country. Among them: Antonio and Banderas, Grinn and Barret, Ho and Hum.

You’re probably not snickering as you drive down Antonio Parkway. But when you stop at the light at Avenue de las Banderas, a certain film star’s visage might come to mind, along with a smile.

“YOU SHOULD SEE the reaction when we try to give directions. You tell people turn left at the corner of Antonio Banderas and they laugh,” said Kathleen Haton, whose city planning office is near the intersection in this small community 60 miles south of Los Angeles.

Same thing might happen as you travel along Ho Road in Carefree, Ariz., and hit the intersection with Hum Road.

Another smile might creep on your face as you hit the intersection of Grinn and Barret drives in West Chester, Ohio; or Hickory, Dickory and Dock streets in Harahan, La.

Nearby Mouse Street just missed it.

Topping the list, with perhaps a white house in the vicinity, is Bland and Gore streets in Pueblo, Colo.

The sudden blip of fame for these towns came from State Farm Insurance, which uncovered the crazy cross-sections while researching a somewhat more serious topic two years ago: America’s 10 most dangerous intersections.

When they repeated the study, they kept an eye out, asked agents to send in submissions — and let researchers vote on the funniest.

“We kind of put our antenna up, watching for them,” said State Farm spokesman Steve Vogel.

The insurance firm also is asking folks to submit their own local favorites on its Web site.

VANISHING ROAD SIGNS

The humor is not lost on those who live near those funny streets.

In West Chester, Ohio, the corner of Grinn and Barret drives have long been a target of pranksters.

“We can’t keep a road sign up there,” said Mark Fitzgerald, the township’s services director. “We had to put one back up for the State Farm photo. As of early this morning, it was still there. I’m not sure how long it will last.”

In Rancho Santa Margarita, residents are taking their celebrity intersection in stride. Although the city’s streets were named long before Banderas’ acting career took off, officials are embracing their spot on the list.

“We’ll take it,” Haton says.

So what does the “Zorro” actor have to say about the streets that bear his name?

Nothing. A spokesman for his publicist said he was not immediately available for comment.

Oh, and back in Carefree, if you make that right onto Hum, you’ll end up on ... Easy Street.

Honest.
