BILL MAHER’S “Politically Incorrect” aired on Comedy Central in 1993, and quickly helped Maher gained a reputation for biting comments that cut issues to the core. Impressed with Maher’s cable success, ABC wooed Maher in 1997 to the post-“Nightline” timeslot where Maher continued his blend of guest-forum discussions of topical events in a show.
Recently, and quite publicly, ABC cancelled the show after a comment he made on his program on the bravery of U.S. military in the wake of 9/11. “Politically Incorrect” ran for 1,200 episodes from 1993-2002. On a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” Maher called himself the “original Dixie chick,” since his remarks on “Politically Incorrect” in the aftermath of 9/11 were heavily criticized as unpatriotic, not unlike the recent furor over the country music trio.
But, not being one to shy away from speaking out, Maher returned this February with his new HBO show “Real Time With Bill Maher” where he’s continuing the tradition of bringing together interesting politicians, entertainers, and journalists to participate in some of the most controversial, topical, and comical discussions on television.
Maher has also recently released his book, “When You Ride Alone, You Ride with Bin Laden: What the Government Should Be Telling Us to Help Fight the War on Terrorism.” This April, Maher will make his Broadway debut at the Virginia Theatre (245 West 52nd St.) in “Bill Maher: Victory Begins at Home,” a stand-up performance inspired by his book.
