National Geographic Explorer wins three Emmys

National Geographic EXPLORER on MSNBC won three Emmy awards during the Sept. 4 News and Documentary awards ceremony in New York City.

National Geographic Explorer on MSNBC won three Emmy awards at last night’s News and Documentary awards ceremony in New York City. Three Explorer films were recognized in two major craft categories: “Hornets from Hell” and “Stalking Leopards” were singled out for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Music and Sound; “Owls: Silent Hunters” was acknowledged for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Lighting Direction and Scenic Design. National Geographic Explorer is a production of National Geographic Television & Film (NGT&F).

“This year, National Geographic Explorer shares the honor with ‘Nova’ on PBS of having won more awards than any other television broadcast. Over the past four years, Explorer has been consistent in taking home more News and Documentary Emmys than any other series,” said David Royle, executive producer of National Geographic Explorer and senior vice president, production for NGT&F. “It is a huge achievement and a wonderful recognition of the quality of our work. To win three Emmys in a year when the competition is as intense as I’ve ever seen it is a tribute to the huge talent of the Explorer team.”

NGT&F received 12 News and Documentary Emmy nominations for this year’s competition. Last night’s three wins brings National Geographic’s cumulative Emmy award total to 122, including 52 for National Geographic Explorer.

In June 2003, National Geographic’s flagship series Explorer launched a new look, a new name and a new high-energy take on documentary filmmaking. The result is Ultimate Explorer, an hour-long, correspondent-driven series hosted by the gutsy and energetic Lisa Ling. Full of verve and charisma, Ultimate Explorer’s correspondents immerse themselves in far-flung locations and cultures, investigating critical issues and presenting highly personal documentaries that cover the world and all that’s in it.

National Geographic Ultimate Explorer airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MSNBC. For programming information and updates for National Geographic Ultimate Explorer, please log on to www.nationalgeographic.com/ultimateexplorer.
