The White House says Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has canceled his visit to the United States after his 12-year-old grandson died.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Wednesday that Obama and Mubarak will instead meet next month when the U.S. president visits Egypt. Gibbs says Obama and his family are offering condolences to the Mubarak family.

The Egyptian presidency says Mubarak's grandson, Mohammed Mubarak, passed away Monday after a "health crisis lasting two days."

The 81-year-old president is believed to be grooming his son, Gamal, to succeed him.
