Interstate 81 Resurfacing Work to Begin Tonight
Dunmore - Work on Interstate 81 North and South between Exit 178 (Avoca) and Exit 186 (Dunmore-Drinker Street) will begin tonight at 8 p.m., weather permitting.A section of interstate 81 both northbound and southbound has been in need of resurfacing for quite a while now. From Exit 178 (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport) to just past Exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway) has had base repair and patch work done in hopes to expand the life of the roadway. It is one of the most traveled sections of I-81 in the District 4 area and many drivers have expressed concerns regarding the condition of the highway.PennDOT has heard those concerns will begin resurfacing work on that section. District Executive George Roberts was able to obtain funds to use towards the resurfacing project. The project was put out to bid on June 6, 2013 and awarded to Popple Construction, Inc. on June 14, 2013. Popple Construction is based out of Laflin, PA. The project will cost about $4.5 million dollars. It will begin this evening with the milling of the River Street Ramps in Scranton. The project will continue Sunday - Friday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. and completion is set for late October.
