A judge in Puerto Rico has sentenced a man to 105 years in prison for the kidnapping, rape and murder of a pregnant tourist from Georgia.

The victim had made a desperate phone call to her fiance from the trunk of her assailant's car. She was found dead an hour later, her throat slashed.

The sentence was imposed today in a courtroom in the eastern Puerto Rican city (Fajardo) where the killer, Eliezer Marquez Navedo, had ambushed Sara Kuszak in February while she jogged alone. She was about five months pregnant.

Marquez pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder and other charges.

When told of the sentence, the slain woman's mother called it "a matter of justice." She said it's a "tragedy" that it took the death of her daughter to get her killer off the streets.

The slaying was similar to murders that the killer's own mother had been convicted of committing in 1992. Police are now reopening their probe into those killings of two young children, to see if Marquez — and not his mother — may have been responsible.
