Two convicted murderers who escaped from an Arkansas prison wearing guard uniforms were captured Tuesday in New York state.

Calvin Adams and Jeffrey Grinder were in the same car that had been left for them at the Cummins Unit prison in Grady, about 90 miles southeast of Little Rock, on Friday night, prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler said.

A New York state trooper tried to stop the men for speeding near Hornell, about 90 miles southeast of Buffalo. The car crashed and the two were caught as they tried to run away, Tyler said. No one was hurt.

On Saturday, police in Arkansas arrested three people suspected of leaving a car for the two escapees.

Arkansas State Police Spokesman Bill Sadler said Deana Davison and Ryan McKinney, both of Little Rock, and Michael Stephenson of Jacksonville, were charged with furnishing an implement for escape, a felony.

Grinder, 32, and Adams, 29, escaped from the prison Friday evening. Video surveillance shows the men putting on the guard uniforms, made as part of the inmates' job at the high-security Cummins Unit, in the prison library after a 6 p.m. headcount.

Like Adams, Jeffrey Grinder was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
They walked out of the prison unchallenged during a shift change soon afterward and drove away in the car left for them, said Tyler.

The men were spotted in Missouri on Saturday and later were seen in Michigan, authorities said.

Five Correction Department officers have been put on unpaid leave while the department investigates the escape. Authorities want to know how the inmates obtained the uniforms and were able to leave the prison without anyone noticing something was amiss, Tyler said.

Grinder and Adams were each convicted of capital murder and were serving life sentences without parole.
