Josh Dean of Moscow, Idaho, submitted this week’s top-rated image of a small church overlooking the Romanian village of Valea Screzii.

Dean is a volunteer center coordinator for the University of Idaho. He, along with 12 students, took a trip to Romania to do volunteer work at an orphanage. While there, Dean hiked up to the church and snapped the image.

The orphanage serves about 70 kids — ages ranging from newborn up to 18 years-old — and offers services for single women and single men.

The people Dean and his group interacted with “weren’t living under the best circumstances, but they loved life and were always smiling and playing,” he said. “I’ll remember the people more than anything else.”

Dean’s passion for volunteer work started when he was a student at the University of Idaho.

“I’m really happy to get this position and be able to do service work as my profession,” he said.

And it’s not just chance that he captured such a spectacular image. Dean studied photojournalism as an undergrad. “I snap pictures here and there with a point-and-shoot,” he said, adding he had his “good camera” on the Romanian trip.
