Albuquerque, N.M.’s Brian Spencer submitted the top-rated image in this week’s It’s A Snap travel photo contest.

Spencer caught the stunning image of Chimney Rock, part of the Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiu, N.M.

The retired Army Reservist said he has “been taking pictures off and on for 20 years,” but only recently became serious.

Spencer bought a used Nikon D70 Digital SLR last year, and together with some fellow photo enthusiasts, “started to travel New Mexico on the weekends and photograph everything from people, events and landscapes to insects — and my favorite, anything at night.”

“I really enjoy insect macro shots, time-lapse photography and long exposure shots,” he said.

Spencer and his photo buddies created a Web site to showcase their work. “We are all amateurs and have only been doing this for about a year.”

Spencer has since purchased a new Nikon D90 for his hobby. He, along with his wife, Susan, and other enthusiasts, now travel once or twice a month. “Recently we visited Mesa Verde in Colorado and Monument Valley in Arizona,” he said, “and some of our upcoming trips include the Bisti Wilderness in New Mexico and the Antelope Canyon area near Page Arizona.”
