A bus carrying mostly Dutch tourists collided with a passenger car on a highway in northeastern Spain, leaving six people dead and 39 injured, the regional government of Catalonia said Friday.

The collision occurred late Thursday near the northeastern town of San Pol de Mar as the bus, carrying 67 people, was returning to area hotels after a day trip to Barcelona.

The regional government said it did not have details of the victims' nationalities, but news reports said they were all Dutch. The driver of the passenger car was uninjured.

Among the injured were 38 Dutch citizens and one person from France, the government said, adding that 25 were in a hospital on Friday, 11 in serious condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
