What’s the difference between underwater photography and landscape photography? For Tom Gubala of Bellevue, Wash., it’s 65 years. That’s the age the amateur photographer promised his wife he would stop taking underwater shots.

The decision clearly hasn’t hurt the quality of his work. Gubala, now 67, submitted the top-rated image in this week’s It’s A Snap! travel photo contest.

Gubala captured the shot from a vista overlooking Mount Rainier in Washington state.

The former Boeing executive left his home at 2 a.m., picked up a friend and arrived at a trailhead near Chinook Pass at 4 a.m. The two hardcore hobbyists hiked 45 minutes by flashlight — all to snap a few photos in a two-minute span when the light was “right.”

The shot “is a result of three exposures of the same shot that I digitally blended,” Gubala said.

You might want to keep an eye out for photos submitted by Gubala. He narrowly missed Photo-of-the-Week honors a few weeks back with his photo of the Grand Tetons and he’s planning to snap some shots on his trip to Egypt in January of 2010.
