Two small planes collided in midair Wednesday about 40 miles south of Phoenix, sending one craft crashing to the ground and killing one person, officials said.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said one person on board the single-engine Cessna 150 was killed when it crashed Wednesday morning in the town of Coolidge. A second person was airlifted to a hospital.

The Cessna crashed in a dirt field within the city limits near a sports complex, said Coolidge police dispatcher Katie Hilborne.

Resident Seth Johnson told KTVK-TV he saw a man jump out about 75 feet from the ground and that the man was dead after the fall. He said a second man was trapped inside the wreckage and was alive and talking as police arrived minutes later.

The pilot of a single-engine Piper Cherokee landed safely in a field about two miles from the Cessna crash. Neither the pilot nor a passenger were hurt.

Gregor said no one on the ground was hurt. Inspectors with the FAA and National Transportation Safety board were on the way to the crash sites.
