Burlington rocks — not just because the Vermont town was recently named one of the top college towns in the nation by Travel + Leisure magazine, either. No, Burlington rocks ... well ... because of the rocks.

Steve Mease, a public information officer for Champlain College, captured the top-rated image in this week’s It’s A Snap travel photo contest after visiting an area featuring rock displays along Lake Champlain.

Mease had heard about the man-made formations along a bike path that overlooks Lake Champlain. Upon visiting, he found a park full of hundreds of “elaborate little sculptures and settings.”

The rock park “grew up out of its own” and visitors are respectful of the displays, Mease said.

The photo enthusiast snapped the photo as the sun was setting earlier this summer. “Light that comes that part of day makes the rocks look even better,” he said.

Mease said he takes pictures at a variety of community events, including theater performances, marathons and the Champlain Valley Fair. “Vermont offers so many opportunities for photographs,” he said.

Next up, Mease plans to turn his lens toward the trees and capture some fall foliage shots.
