A woman who was considering jumping from a San Diego bridge surrendered Tuesday about 8 1/2 hours after police negotiators closed a downtown freeway, backing up traffic for miles.

Police say negotiators were sent to talk to the 47-year-old woman on a bridge over Interstate 5 shortly after 1:40 a.m. Tuesday.

CHP Officer Ray Scheidnes said the woman climbed on top of a chain-link cage covering the sides of the bridge near Balboa Park. She remained there, some 60 feet above the freeway, until surrendering at around 10 a.m., he said.

She was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

The southbound lanes and all but two northbound lanes were closed most of the night. The open lanes were closed less than an hour before the woman surrendered.
