San Francisco, from $108 a night

The Real Deal: The Glide into the Holidays package includes one night at the Westin St. Francis on Union Square, admission for two to skate at the annual Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square, and skate rentals for two. Rates start at $108 per room per night for a three-night stay.

The fine print: Breakfast is not included. Taxes are an additional 15.6 percent. Based on single or double occupancy. Add $9 per room per night for a two-night stay and $51 per room per night for a one-night stay.

The Real Deal: The Holiday Family Survival package features a one-night stay at one of six area Personality Hotels properties: Hotel Vertigo, Hotel Frank, Hotel Diva, Kensington Park Hotel, Hotel Union Square, or Hotel Metropolis. You also receive a bottle of champagne, holiday candy, a $10 gas card, overnight parking, a calendar filled with kid-friendly holiday events in San Francisco, and a list of places of local shops.

Children will have their own check-in and will stay in kid suites complete with pint-size furniture, bunk beds, toys, and video games. Parents will sleep in an adjoining room or a separate bedroom area, depending on the hotel and the type of suite. Rates start at $139 per room per night.

The Home for the Holidays package includes one night at the 279-room Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley Hills, a choice between a peppermint latte and a peppermint hot chocolate, child care for three hours at the Claremont Kids' Club, free Internet access in the room, overnight parking, and complimentary use of the hotel's fitness facilities and three pools.
