   >>> the virginia couple that managed to find their way into last week's white house state dinner finally spoke out about the episode on the "today" show this morning. and with the release of e-mails they exchanged with an obama administration official. nbc news white house correspondent savannah guthrie with us tonight with more on this. savannah, good evening.

   >> reporter: brian, good evening. the couple did give us those e-mails and spoke out on nbc than got us thinking about this bravo connection. we all know the couple is trying out for "the real housewives" series on bravo. bravo and nbc news share the same parent company. but today nbc made clear the interview had nothing to do with that series or bravo, nor was the couple paid to appear.

   >> reporter: the couple today matt lauer exclusively on the "today" show, it was all a big misunderstanding.

   >> we were inviters, not crashers. and there isn't anyone who would have the audacity or the poor behave tore do that.

   >> reporter: the salahis say they can prove why they thought they were invited guests to the white house on the night of the state dinner for the independent yang prime minister.

   >> i think the american public is actually going to be extremely surprised --

   >> reporter:lahis lawyers supplied nbc news with the e-mails. and an appointee who spoke at the 2008 convention was acquainted with the salahis. michelle said the state din waerz closed but suggested she may be able to get them into the arrival ceremony. salahis couple said they thought that meant the arrival or receiving line for the dinner. but the only revival was scheduled for that morning. and michele jones said they were cleared for the receiving line, which they claimed was at the white house that night. the morning of the dinner, jones e-mailed the morning of the white house had been canceled but she was still working on state dinner tickets. later on tuesday, however, jones left an e-mail for the salahis saying they couldn't get them tickets to the dinner. but spending a day at a georgetown salon theshgs say they never got the message. they showed up at the white house , gotting inside, mixing and mingling, shaking the president's hand. at the end of the night, they suggested the couple showed up unsure whether they were really invited. hi, michele, you are an angel. obviously, you worked out at the end. we ended up going to the gate, just to check in case it approved since we didn't know, and our name wasn't on the list. and jones responded, tareq, you are most welcome. delighted you yhad a wonderful time. and she assumed they got the ticket another way. this in no way doesn't change the bottom line . they say the e-mails don't change that at all, brian.
