Authorities in the Turks and Caicos Islands say an American Airlines jet has made an emergency landing there after the crew smelled fumes inside the cabin.

Peter Forbes, of the British territory's civil aviation authority, says the plane had been traveling from Miami to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia when it made the unscheduled stop around noon Monday.

Forbes said all 109 people aboard the plane evacuated safely at the airport in Providenciales. He said it was unclear what released the fumes and that mechanics were evaluating the Boeing 737-800.

American Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
