An 8-year-old boy was found dead and his socialite mother near death in a room at a luxury Manhattan hotel, New York City Police said.

Police said they're investigating the death at the five-star Peninsula Hotel just off Fifth Avenue as a possible murder and attempted suicide. They said prescription drugs may have been involved.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that a suicide note was found at the scene. The official wasn't authorized to publicly disclose details of the probe and insisted on anonymity.

Police said the 49-year-old woman's relatives told police Friday they feared the child was in danger. Police first went to her Central Park apartment building and then to the hotel.

The woman was in stable condition, police said.
