Authorities say charges are pending against a driver after a 4-year-old British girl was fatally struck by a car on a Florida beach.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Ellie Louise Bland was walking hand-in-hand with her uncle Saturday afternoon on Daytona Beach when she stepped in front of a Lincoln Town Car driven by 66-year-old Barbara Worley of Elberton, Georgia.

An accident report states Worley was driving in the beach's travel lane under the 10-mph (16-kph) speed limit when she struck the girl.

Troopers say Worley stopped the car but then panicked, hit the accelerator and drove over the child.

The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Relatives told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that the girl was visiting from Nottingham, England.

Troopers say the crash remains under investigation.
