Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson has been hospitalized with what doctors believe is a bacterial infection, according to the Georgia lawmaker's office.

Isakson, 65, began feeling ill and dehydrated Monday and was admited to a Georgia hospital for treatment.

"Senator Isakson is responding very well to the treatment and is feeling much better," said spokeswoman Joan Kirchner. "He met this morning with his Senate chief of staff at the hospital and hopes to be back at work soon."

The Georgia lawmaker served three terms in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 2004.
