A group of U.N. human rights experts has urged Honduras to protect journalists in the country after seven were killed in the past six weeks.

The U.N. experts are calling on the government to investigate the killings and prosecute those responsible.

They also want the government to "take all necessary steps" to protect other journalists who have been threatened because of their work.

The appeal was signed Monday by the Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Council's independent investigators for free speech, Frank la Rue; extrajudicial executions, Philip Alston; and protection of human rights defenders, Margaret Sekaggya.
