President Barack Obama has sent supporters a video message about his choice of Solicitor General Elena Kagan (ah-LAY'-nuh KAYH'-gun) as his nominee for the Supreme Court.

Obama's comments in the four-minute, 18-second video echo his words Monday when he and Kagan appeared at the White House. He says the 50-year-old Kagan embodies the excellence of liberal retiring Justice John Paul Stevens.

Obama also called on the Senate to confirm Kagan swiftly.

Obama sent his supporters a similar message last year after he nominated Sonia Sotomayor to succeed Justice David Souter on the high court. The video was e-mailed by Organizing for America, which is an arm of the Democratic Party.
