The basics: The "honeymoon" is actually a gift card of up to $750. To be eligible, couples need to book a reception by Dec. 30. The actual reception can take place at a later date. Couples get an American Express prepaid card about 10 days after they book the reception.

The catch: There are a few. First, the reward is tiered depending on how much you spend on the reception. To get the full $750, you need to spend $15,000 before tax. If you spend $3,000, you get a $200 card.

The card also expires 12 months after it's issued and can only be used at retailers in the U.S. or Puerto Rico.

Other details: The costs, reception options, cancellation fees, down payment and other terms vary greatly by location.

At the Holiday Inn just outside Atlanta, for example, 25 percent of the total reception costs are due if you cancel more than two months prior to the event.
