Motorola and Verizon today announced the launch of the Droid 2, the first smartphone with Froyo, Android 2.2 built in. Droid 2 will be available from Verizon this Thursday and can be pre-ordered beginning tomorrow for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a new two-year contract.
The new Droid features a 1Ghz processor, 8 gigabyte (GB) memory plus an additional 8GB on a removable card, a larger full QWERTY keyboard with proportionately larger keys, a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, and a 5-megapixel camera with flash. It can be used as an internet hotspot to provide connectivity to as many as five Wi-Fi capable devices. including PCs via its 3G mobile hotspot feature.
Andoid’s 2.2, Google’s latest iteration of its operating system, has been rolling out as an update to other Android phones, a process that is expected to be completed by the end of this month. Droid 2 is the first Android phone to arrive with 2.2. The system supports HTML5 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1, to enable users to view most Web sites.
The Droid 2 is targeted for both business and personal use. Full push corporate email, support for Microsoft Exchange, a unified inbox and security features including Microsoft wipe and password enforcement satisfy most business needs, while home screen social networking apps like Facebook and Twitter, Swype texting for quicker and more accurate texting on the touchscreen, and wireless connectivity for streaming video from the phone to compatible devices like HDTVs and gaming consoles address leisure needs.
The Droid 2 offers 50 percent more talk time compared with the original Droid introduced last November, according to Motorola.
