LAS VEGAS, Sept. 8, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Northrop Grumman Corporation-led (NYSE:NOC) joint venture National Security Technologies (NSTec) LLC continues to participate in the U.S. Department of Energy's internship program. NSTec recently hosted five U.S. Military Academy cadets, a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman and a U.S. Air Force Academy cadet at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS)'s National Center for Nuclear Security as part of its evolving scientific program.

NSTec operates and manages the NNSS for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and has invested more than $1 million in education grants focused on science and engineering support.

NSTec gave the interns, who are pursuing a variety of degrees including nuclear physics, an opportunity to get hands-on experience with experiments that detect nuclear materials, where the materials are and where they came from. They spent several weeks working with the scientific community focusing on detection and verification technologies. The interns also researched the Counter Terrorism Operations Support (CTOS) Center, which provides first responder training in the event of a nuclear incident.

"The scientific program gives us the opportunity to provide future military leadership with a window on NNSA's role in supporting the warfighter, which is paramount for collaborative interchange," says Asa VonSudderth, principal engineer, NNNS. "These next generation military leaders will have insight to technologies and how the national laboratory complex can meet their needs. This is an integral part to making the nation safe and secure from weapons of mass destruction."

The scientific program supports the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty of 1996 and the administration's focus on treaty verification, and has expanded during its initial three years. Nine midshipmen, three Air Force Academy cadets and five West Point cadets have completed internships since the program's inception.
