Nearly eight tons of hashish have been seized from an abandoned shipping trailer in Montreal, the RCMP said.

The stash was found in the LaSalle borough over the weekend, CBC.com reported, quoting  RCMP spokesman Cpl. Luc Thibault.

Thibault said the hash bricks, each about the size of a laptop computer, were found boxed and wrapped in denim clothing. He said the 7-million-gram haul was the largest hash seizure his detachment could remember, but he declined to give a dollar figure to CBC.com.

CBC.com said a 2007 RCMP drug report put the street price of hash at an average $10 per gram. In all of 2007, the report said, Mounties seized just 227,000 kilograms of hashish.

There have been no arrests in the case, and it was unclear where the hashish came to Canada from. Afghanistan is the top hashish-producing country in the world, the United Nations reported this year. Other big producers include Morocco, Pakistan and India.
