SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 20, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, today announced that its new MIPS32® M14K™ synthesizable processor core family has been selected as the "Best IP" in the 'Embedded Systems Editor's Choice Awards 2010.' The annual awards are sponsored by the publishing house of one of China's foremost embedded technology magazines, Electronic Engineering & Product World (EEPW), under the direction of the China Computer Foundation Embedded System Technical Committee (Technical Committee on Microcomputers), China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) IC Design Branch, and CSIA Embedded System and Application Committee.

"We are pleased that some of China's leading authorities on semiconductor technology have selected the M14K cores as this year's 'Best IP'," said Art Swift, vice president of marketing and business development, MIPS Technologies. "The M14K cores are the first synthesizable MIPS cores to be designed by our Shanghai-based China Engineering Center. The cores represent a significant value for developers of 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs) and other cost-sensitive embedded applications, and are experiencing rapid and widespread adoption. The MIPS® architecture continues to proliferate into new markets such as 32-bit MCUs because of its compelling performance, power and cost advantages."

"The winners of the Embedded Systems Editor's Choice Awards are selected based on criteria including breakthroughs in cost and performance, as well as innovation in the China semiconductor market," said Mary Chen, executive publisher, EEPW. "We are pleased to award the new MIPS cores for innovative code compression technology which leads to lower-cost silicon implementations while maintaining a high level of performance. We also commend MIPS Technologies for its foresight in assembling a talented team of Chinese engineers who designed this new core family in China."

For each of the past seven years, EEPW's Embedded Systems Editor's Choice Awards have recognized innovation and breakthroughs in embedded systems technologies. This year, more than 40 types of embedded system-related products were nominated in multiple categories. The award-winning products in each category were determined through thousands of online votes from developers and users, instruction opinions from the China Computer Foundation Embedded System Technical Committee (Technical Committee on Microcomputers), China Semiconductor Industry Association IC Design Branch and CSIA Embedded System and Application Committee, as well as extensive review by EEPW's embedded system editorial board members.

About the M14K Core Family

The MIPS32 M14K core family provides high levels of system performance for extremely cost-sensitive embedded applications such as 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), home entertainment, personal entertainment and home networking. The MIPS32 M14K and M14Kc™ cores are the first MIPS32-compatible cores that also execute the new microMIPS™ instruction set architecture (ISA), achieving high performance of 1.5 DMIPS/MHz with an advanced level of code compression. The microMIPS ISA maintains 98% of MIPS32 performance while reducing code size by 35%, translating to significant silicon cost savings. With smaller code size and efficient use of the instruction cache to lower the cost, the microMIPS ISA also helps to reduce system power consumption.

About the MIPS China Engineering Center (CEC)

Founded in 2004, the MIPS China Engineering Center (CEC) is a dedicated R&D center in Shanghai. The MIPS CEC team is the first China-based team of a leading multinational microprocessor IP company to develop a synthesizable processor core in China, with the new M14K core family. The MIPS CEC team has also successfully developed numerous hard CPU IP cores with test chips taped out in various processes specifically for the China embedded CPU market. In addition to designing microprocessors, the MIPS CEC team works on application and development software including development around the Android™ operating system that is key for mobile and consumer electronics applications.
