WESTBOROUGH, Mass., Sept. 28, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Viking Systems, Inc. (OTCBB:VKNG) confirmed it has scheduled the launch of its Next Generation 3DHD Visualization System for Monday, October 4, 2010 at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress (ACS) being held October 3-7 in Washington, DC. The announcement was made at the Sony 3D for Surgery media event which was held September 23, 2010 at Sony Corporation of America Headquarters in New York.

Jed Kennedy, Viking Systems President & CEO stated, "I am pleased to announce that we will launch our Next Generation 3DHD System at ACS on October 4." Kennedy went on to say, "Now surgeons performing complex laparoscopic surgery will no longer be limited by 2D vision and will have access to high quality 3D vision in a cost effective and flexible format. Performing complex minimally invasive procedures with a 3D vision system has the potential not only to improve the quality of care but also to reduce procedure time and therefore cost of procedures."

George Santanello, General Manager, Sony Medical Division, explained that the importance of 3D video is not limited to entertainment. 3D has many other practical applications and Sony is on the forefront of developing equipment to support those uses. Mr. Santanello said, "We recognize Viking's innovative and substantial 3D experience related to vision systems for minimally invasive surgery. Working closely with forward-thinking companies like Viking Systems is an extremely important part of Sony Medical's long-term 3D strategy."

Mr. Kennedy explained Viking's choice of Sony as its display provider saying, "Sony's technologic leadership position in the surgical display market combined with their superior 3D technology made their display the logical choice for our 3DHD Surgical Vision System."

Gerald Andriole, MD, Viking Systems Medical Advisor, explained the clinical benefits of 3D and said, "We live in a 3 dimensional world and it is about time surgeons performing complex minimally invasive surgery have access to this technology." A video of Dr. Andriole's comments, explaining the clinical benefits of 3DHD and its emerging role in complex laparoscopic surgery will be presented at Sony's booth in its 3DHD theatre during the upcoming American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress. Also in its booth, Sony will showcase Viking Systems 3DHD system in an interactive 3D workstation.

The Company plans to have several of the Next Generation 3DHD Visualization Systems set up in interactive workstations in its booth at ACS. The interactive workstations are designed to provide attendees a chance to experience the 3DHD system in a simulated surgical environment.

Viking Systems first publicly demonstrated its "Next Generation" 3DHD camera system utilizing a prototype Sony 3DHD flat panel display in October 2009 at ACS. The Company plans to ship production systems before year end.
