CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Oct. 6, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mondo, a global leader in the sports and contract flooring markets, today announced that the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute has awarded the prestigious GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification to 13 of its rubber flooring surfaces.

The flooring products that received certification are Advance, Geode MD, Harmoni, Highjolt, Mondoflex II, Mondotrack, Natura, Ramflex, Sport Impact, Sportflex, Sportflex M, Super X and Terranova, all of which also have earned GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification.

GEI's Children & Schools Certification is awarded to products that meet strict criteria for chemical emissions, a consideration that is particularly important for products intended for use in schools, day-care centers and other environments where children spend significant amounts of time. While poor indoor air quality affects everyone, children are more sensitive than adults to exposure to chemicals in their indoor environments. The criteria for the GREENGUARD Children & Schools program takes into account the special sensitivities of children and approaches chemical emissions with a comprehensive and precautionary approach.

"Research shows a correlation between asthma and poor indoor air quality," said Henning Bloech, executive director of GEI. "In fact, asthma rates have risen 160 percent in the last 14 years in children under the age of 5. This is why it is so important for Mondo's products to have achieved GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification, the strictest standard we offer. Products certified to this stringent standard have been screened for more than 10,000 different volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, ensuring the fewest possible chemicals are released into the indoor air."

GREENGUARD Certification is an industry-independent, third-party certification program for low-emitting products and materials.  All certified products are listed in the free online GREENGUARD Product Guide along with certificates that detail the criteria these products have met. GREENGUARD Children & Schools Certification exceeds the California's Department of Public Health Section 01350, and certified products can contribute to the fulfillment of credit requirements in The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) for K-12 schools, and for LEED certification.

A member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Mondo is committed to producing surfaces that do not harm the environment at any stage of the manufacturing process—from the time raw materials are harvested to production to disposal following their useful life, which can be 25 years or more.

"Mondo has always invested heavily in manufacturing durable, high-quality flooring that is safe for the people who use it—and for the environment," said Federico Stroppiana, president of Mondo North and South America. "Our rubber flooring products are antibacterial and antimicrobial throughout, and do not emit harmful chemicals, which is why schools, hospitals and day-care centers install Mondo products with the utmost confidence."

Mondo rubber flooring is made of sustainable materials including renewable natural rubber, natural fillers and color pigments that are free of lead and other heavy metals. The company's artificial turf products also are designed to be environmentally friendly, and are made with post-consumer recycled content and recyclable materials. Ecofill, Mondo's newest artificial turf infill, is a patented, environmentally friendly, factory-manufactured polyolefin-based granule infill. It is completely recyclable, which is an industry first.
