BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 7, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been selected as the preferred supplier for the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center's (AUTEC) Electronic Warfare Simulator Enhancement (EWSE) Program.

Under the terms of the contract, Northrop Grumman's Buffalo, N.Y.-based Amherst Systems business unit will provide an upgrade to the existing Electronic Warfare Threat Simulator (EWTS) located at Andros Island, Bahamas.  AUTEC's EWTS system is capable of illuminating air, surface and submarine platforms in complex scenarios on the instrumented tracking range at Andros Island. EWTS is a real-time system that generates complex, dynamic, electromagnetic signal environments at the radio frequency (RF) level.  With this system, AUTEC has the capability to test different platform receivers in an open-air, over-the-water range environment.

"Northrop Grumman will provide its industry-leading electronic warfare simulation technology for the EWTS to assist the U.S. Navy with testing of sub-surface vessels," said Sue Nowicki, director of the company's combat training range business activities. "This important win enables us to further expand our open air simulation capabilities allowing us to continue to provide the most advanced test and training systems to our nation's warfighters."

The EWTS system consists of a radar simulator, pedestal and controller, antennas, high-power amplifiers, calibration equipment, an operator workstation and is housed in an air-conditioned radome located at the top of a testing tower.

The AUTEC provides instrumented operational areas in a real world environment to satisfy research, development, test and evaluation requirements. The center also enables operational performance assessment of warfighter readiness in support of the full spectrum of maritime warfare.
