SUNNYVALE, Calif., Oct. 12, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer, home networking, wireless, communications and business applications, announced today that IUNIKA S.A. has selected both of its Coherent Processing Systems (CPS) for development of its next-generation mobile computing devices, including eco-friendly e-books, laptops and netbooks. The license includes the multi-threaded, multiprocessing MIPS32® 1004Kf™ CPS and the new superscalar MIPS32 1074Kf™ CPS.

IUNIKA's products are developed with unique and patented technologies that are focused on areas of potential growth for consumer electronics—environmental protection and education. In its next-generation family of mobile computing platforms, IUNIKA will leverage its patented parental control technology that is implemented in hardware, as well as its patented multi-platform software technology that offers end users the flexibility to run software originally designed for other processor architectures.

"MIPS Technologies is offering us two paths to multicore performance in our next generation products, with the 1004K and 1074K CPS. These IP cores provide IUNIKA's hardware and software development teams with unmatched options for achieving ideal combinations of performance, power consumption and cost. The cores will enable us to create a compelling lineup of computing products superior in value, eco-friendliness and utility for educational purposes than any of our competitors. Our devices will benefit from the technical advantages of the MIPS architecture, as well as the broad ecosystem of support built around it," said Angel Blazquez, CEO, IUNIKA.

"Innovative companies are increasingly looking to MIPS Technologies for mobile device development because of the advantages we can provide in terms of performance, power consumption and cost. Companies are also looking for a way to differentiate their devices in the market, and MIPS offers that opportunity. We are pleased that an innovative company like IUNIKA has chosen MIPS, and we look forward to working closely with them as they develop products that hold promise to help both the environment and education," said Art Swift, vice president of marketing and business development, MIPS Technologies.

According to a recent report from research firm In-Stat, mobile computing continues to see surging demand resulting from sleeker designs, new form factors, and pent-up business demand. The company predicts that mobile computing devices, including tablets, mini-notes (netbooks & smartbooks) and notebook PCs will grow at a 19.1% CAGR through 2014 and account for over 400 million units.

About the 1074K CPS

Introduced by MIPS in September 2010, the new 1074K CPS offers industry-leading speed for fully-synthesizable multicore IP. Using commercially-available standard cell libraries, memories and EDA design flows, the 1074K CPS approaches production frequencies of 1.5 GHz in 40nm G process. With the 1074K CPS, MIPS Technologies is making multicore performance widely accessible and affordable for companies developing the next generation of internet-connected multimedia products such as digital televisions, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes (STBs). This platform is also targeted for home/wireless networking products as well as tablet computers leveraging the popular Android™ operating system. The 1074Kf CPS includes a floating point unit (FPU) in each core.

About the 1004K CPS

The 1004K CPS is the industry's first multi-threaded multiprocessor IP core. Leveraging the multi-threading capability, the 1004K CPS achieves over 2.9 CoreMark™/MHz per core, putting it among the highest scores available in the database of tested cores on the Coremark.org website. Couple this performance with the small size and low-power implementation, and the 1004K series provides one of the most performance/power efficient solutions in the industry. The 1004Kf CPS includes an FPU in each core.
