Non-interest income increased $27,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. The increase was primarily due to an increase in income related to an additional $2.2 million in bank owned life insurance purchased in May 2010.

Non-interest expense increased $114,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. The primary reason for the increase was additional professional fees expense related to being a public company.

The income tax expense for the three months ended September 30, 2010 was $137,000 compared to $52,000 for the same period in 2009. The primary reason for the change was the increase in taxable income during the 2010 period.

Results of Operations – Nine Months Ended September 30, 2010 and 2009

Net interest income after provision for loan losses increased $125,000, or 2.03%, for the nine months ended September 30, 2010 as compared to the same period in 2009. Interest income decreased $287,000 when comparing the two periods as the average yield on interest earning assets decreased from 6.49% during the nine months ended September 30, 2009 to 5.59% for the same period in 2010, which more than offset the increase in average interest earning assets from $228.6 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2009 to $258.5 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2010. While the average loan balance increased $839,000 when comparing the two periods, the average balances of short term and other investments increased more significantly, by $29.1 million, primarily due to the deployment of funds received in the Bank's mutual to stock conversion in January 2010. Interest expense decreased $974,000 as the average cost of interest bearing liabilities decreased from 2.77% to 2.10% when comparing the same two periods, while the average balance of interest bearing liabilities increased $5.3 million from $210.7 million to $216.0 million. The provision for loan losses increased $562,000 from $546,000 for the nine months ended September 30, 2009 to $1.1 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2010, primarily due to the increase in loans classified as substandard and the decline in overall economic conditions. Substandard loans increased from $4.1 million at September 30, 2009 to $7.7 million, $9.3 million, $10.0 million and $9.4 million at December 31, 2009, March 31, 2010, June 30, 2010 and September 30, 2010, respectively.

Non-interest income decreased $349,000 for the nine months ended September 30, 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. The decrease was primarily due to a decrease in income related to the sale of mortgage loans on the secondary market.

Non-interest expense increased $1.3 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. The primary reason for the increase was the contribution of $1.1 million in stock and cash to the Athens Federal Foundation.
