DETROIT, Oct. 28, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Gomez, the web performance division of Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq:CPWR), today published the results for the September U.S. Retail Mobile Site Performance Index. This Index measures the performance of mobile-specific versions of retail websites for 15 leading retailers across four carrier and device combinations.

For September, QVC earned the number one ranking across all 15 retail companies with an average response time of 2.3 seconds, average availability of 99.93 percent and average consistency of 1.5 seconds. Newegg.com and Amazon ranked #2 and #3 consecutively, with William Sonoma (#4) and Dell (#5) rounding out the top five.

"Shoppers with smartphones and other devices are looking to research and purchase products online, so many retailers are jumping into the mobile game," said Matt Poepsel, VP Performance Strategies, Gomez. "However, any mobile website that fails to perform a transaction at speeds that mimic shopper behavior -standing in line, stopped on a sidewalk, or sitting in a bus - is unlikely to get consumers to use the mobile service again."

The U.S. Retail Mobile Site Performance Index is an aggregate ranking across all U.S. Retail Mobile benchmark measurements taken by one of four carrier and device combinations: AT&T/iPhone, Sprint/HTC Hero, T-Mobile/HTC Dream and Verizon/Droid. This exclusive "Rank of Ranks" scorecard provides a single, overall rank of the mobile performance of 15 U.S. Retailers.

Gomez' U.S Retail mobile benchmarks - which now include the industry's first U.S Retail iPhone Mobile Application Benchmark that measures the iPhone mobile application performance of leading U.S. retailers - provide retailers with the industry's most comprehensive view of mobile performance. Gomez has doubled the number of global Web and mobile performance benchmarks it has published for over ten years to more than 100 that include more than 3,000 companies in dozens of industries with data generated from over 20 million monthly tests.

Gomez web benchmarks involve testing the websites of target companies using a subset of the Gomez Network, which features more than 150 high-bandwidth "backbone" locations and more than 150,000 actual end-user " Last Mile " locations around the world. Gomez Mobile benchmarks test mobile-specific versions of target websites. These are typically "streamlined" versions of websites that were created specifically with the mobile form factor and throughput speeds in mind. Gomez Business Process benchmarks measure typical multistep processes -- such as purchasing a product or performing a stock trade -- across major brands in the same industry.
