This heightened level of community service involved students, faculty and staff in activities at more than 30 campuses.

In some cases, events spanned the week, as it was also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Oct. 17, students and staff from SBI - Garden City participated in the American Cancer Society Making Strides for Breast Cancer Awareness walk. Students and staff walked in memory of Leah Carbonell, a valued colleague and friend who lost her battle with breast cancer in January. More than 100 students, faculty and staff walked as Team Leah and raised more than $5,700 for the American Cancer Society.

On the same day, more than 240 students, faculty and staff from SBI Campus - Melville, SBI - White Plains and SBI - NYC, participated in the American Cancer Society Making Strides for Breast Cancer Awareness walk in New York. Through their combined efforts, they raised nearly $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.      

On Oct. 20, SBC - Tinley Park (Ill.) sent 25 students and faculty to plant a 'ribbon' of 500 pink tulips in the garden in front of the Tinley Park Village Hall in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. The American Cancer Society brought out cancer survivors, and Mayor Edward Zabrocki of Tinley Park came out to view the event.

In Milwaukee, the giving will continue as Sanford-Brown College (SBC) - Milwaukee announced that it is partnering with Columbia St. Mary's and New Life Presbyterian Church to staff the New Life-West Family Resource Center and offer its services to the Milwaukee community. The wellness resource center celebrated its grand opening on October 19, 2010. Several community leaders attended the grand opening, including Dr. Steve Guell, president of Sanford-Brown College - Milwaukee, Dr. Terrell Cistrunk of New Life Presbyterian Church and Bill Solberg, community services director of Columbia St. Mary's.

The New Life-West Family Resource Center is designed for the residents of Milwaukee to receive free health screenings and wellness education and will be open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Sanford-Brown College - Milwaukee medical assistant students and faculty will help staff the free health center, checking vital signs, answering questions and assisting nurses. The students will assist in screening clients for high blood pressure, heart-rate irregularities, weight issues and other health concerns, and then hospital nurses will offer evaluations. Clients will be referred to physicians or treatment clinics if medical procedures, further treatment or medication are necessary. The students will also assist in ongoing wellness education programs including healthy cooking classes, diabetes management seminars, healthy pregnancy programs, healthy eating classes and more.

Other events around the country included:

  • 26 pets were micro-chipped (St. Peters, Missouri)
  • 35 dental screenings and cleanings for free (Missouri College)
  • 60 bags of trash were collected from a bike path (Cranston, R.I.)
  • 70 massages administered at a nursing home (Pittsburgh)
  • 200 bags of groceries were assembled at a food pantry (Skokie, Ill.)
  • 400 meals were delivered in conjunction with Meals on Wheels (Dallas)
  • 559 units of blood were collected (Brown College/Minneapolis, Cleveland, Dearborn, Garden City, Hillside, Indianapolis, Monroeville, Pittsburgh, San Antonio and Vienna)
  • 3100+ pounds of food were collected (Cleveland & Dearborn)
