LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has been honored by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Los Angeles Chapter with its Outstanding Corporation Award. The award was presented at ceremonies marking the association's 25th anniversary celebration of National Philanthropy Day.

The award nomination noted, "Northrop Grumman's philanthropy programs help to address the challenges facing our nation and local communities, and strives to meet the diverse needs of the people of those communities."

"We are proud to be recognized with this award," said Sandra Evers-Manly, Northrop Grumman vice president of corporate responsibility. "We strive through our local and national efforts through science education and veterans programs to contribute to the future well-being of this city and our nation."

The company's philanthropic efforts are focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics education to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians. Its Weightless Flights of Discovery (WFOD) program is a unique teacher professional development program designed to inspire students to pursue science and technical careers by inspiring their teachers first. The program provides microgravity flights for math and science teachers and has sponsored 1,272 participants on 44 flights in 24 locations since 2006.

The company also supports programs that assist the nation's troops and veterans, including Operation IMPACT (Injured Military Pursuing Assisted Career Transition), in which Northrop Grumman identifies career opportunities within the company for returning veterans severely injured in combat. If the veteran is unable to work, career support is offered to the immediate family member who will become the primary wage earner.

In December 2010, the company will support the USO through sponsorship of the 2010 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman for the benefit of the USO. Net proceeds from the game will benefit USO programs to entertain troops overseas, establish welcome centers across the country, and to reach out to the families of service members.

The AFP promotes the ethical advancement of philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. Its Greater Los Angeles chapter has more than 400 members who are professional fundraisers, executive directors, volunteers and service providers.

Northrop Grumman Corporation is a leading global security company whose 120,000 employees provide innovative systems, products, and solutions in aerospace, electronics, information systems, shipbuilding and technical services to government and commercial customers worldwide. Please visit www.northropgrumman.com for more information.
