The Arizona Department of Health Services says there are 27 lab-confirmed cases of influenza since the season began Sept. 26.

Of those, 12 are in Maricopa County. At this time last year, influenza activity was "widespread."

The East Valley Tribune reports there have also been 17 lab-confirmed cases of RSV, a respiratory cold-like illness that can be severe in young children.

RSV can infect the lungs and breathing airways. All the confirmed cases are in children younger than 5.
