A health insurance provider is closing its office in Shelton, a move that will put about 750 people out of work over the next two years.

Health Net of the Northeast has notified the state Department of Labor that it plans to begin cutting staff in January with the phase-out of the office continuing through March 2012.

The company has told affected workers they will receive severance packages.

California-based Health Net Inc. has about 9,000 total employees and about 6 million group and individual subscribers..

Health Net of the Northeast sold its customer base to UnitedHealthcare in 2009.
