LAS VEGAS, Nov. 17, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mondo, a global leader in the sports and contract flooring markets, today announced that Idea, its newest rubber flooring system, has received a 2010 Nightingale Award for Healthcare Product Design.

Contract magazine, along with The Center for Health Design, announced the award winners this week at the Healthcare Design 2010 conference. Five winners, as well as one honorable mention, were named across a variety of markets. The annual program, which is open to conference exhibitors showcasing new and innovative products launched since the Nightingale 2009 awards, seeks to promote and recognize excellence in product design that enhances the quality of healthcare.

The 2010 Nightingale Awards winners were selected by a panel of healthcare industry and design professionals. Each product was evaluated on merits of overall contribution to the quality of healthcare, functionality, quality/durability, aesthetics/style, environmental sustainability and pricing.

During the judges' deliberation, "Where is the innovation?" was the common question posed to each product under review. The competition is meant to designate those products directly contributing to the quality of healthcare. The judges were looking to recognize products that are innovative, present something new that hasn't been seen before and meet an existing need in the market.

"This award is a testament to Mondo's long-standing dedication to developing innovative, high-performance contract flooring that is environmentally friendly and helps create a superior working, learning or healing environment," said Federico Stroppiana, president of Mondo North and South America.

Coordinated Flooring System

Mondo Idea is a coordinated flooring system with three components:

  • "One," which is solid-colored flooring that comes in 30 colors
  • "Grain," which is speckled flooring that comes in the 30 "One" base colors with coordinated color flecks
  • "Decors," which is patterned flooring that comes in six designs, with each design available in two colors

It comes in colors and designs developed specifically for a variety of commercial environments, including healthcare. The innovative flooring also features patterns embedded into the vulcanized rubber during manufacturing, which is an industry first.

The coordinated, complementary colors and flecks in Mondo Idea are based on colors and textures found in nature. Created for every design need, the color collection provides the best hues and ideal levels of color saturation and transparency.

The Decors component of the system includes a range of speckled colors formed into distinct patterns and embedded into the flooring through Mondo's patented manufacturing process. It was based on the concept developed by Cibic in which the use of patterned, decorative flooring helps to characterize and personalize a space, like a decorative rug.

Mondo Idea marks the first time patterns have been embedded into resilient flooring during manufacturing.

Another unique attribute of the Mondo Idea system is that it groups the colors of One, Grain and Decors into thematic palettes, such as healthcare, with some groups further segmented into color palettes specifically for children, adults and seniors. This gives architects and designers a built-in design offering to use or build upon during the preliminary stages of the project.

"The patterns of Decors will let architects, designers and design studios customize their flooring to give character to the interiors while combining them with the solid or speckled colors of One and Grain to create stimulating spaces that are rich in personality but still meet the needs of the environment where the flooring will be used," said Stroppiana. "With Mondo Idea, the design possibilities are endless."

Mondo Idea also provides excellent comfort by effectively reducing the sound of foot traffic, minimizing foot fatigue without affecting the movement of heavy rolling loads and reducing the risk of injuries when falling compared to other surfaces. The long-lasting, non-porous surface is water-, stain- and chemical-resistant, is low maintenance and has high dimensional stability. Ideal for healthcare environments, it is bacteriostatic throughout, so it does not require any synthetic antibacterial components or topical coatings.

In addition, the flooring features outstanding slip resistance and is safe for the environment, since it does not contain any plasticizers, heavy metals, formaldehyde or asbestos. It also was designed to have a low emission of volatile organic compounds.
