ATLANTA, Nov. 30, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBank Atlanta) has announced the results of the 2010 election for three member director and two independent director positions on the board of directors. All directors' new terms will begin on Jan. 1, 2011.

FHLBank Atlanta member institutions in Florida re-elected Miriam Lopez, president and director of Marquis Bank in North Miami Beach to a new four-year term. She previously served as chief executive officer of TransAtlantic Bank in Miami for 24 years and as TransAtlantic's chairman of the board from 2003 to 2007. She is a former president of the Florida Bankers Association and serves on the American Bankers Association's Government Relations Council. She was first elected to the FHLBank Atlanta Board of Directors in 2008.

Member institutions in Georgia elected John C. Helmken, II, chief executive officer and director of The Savannah Bank in Savannah to a four-year term. He is also president, chief executive officer, and director of The Savannah Bancorp, Inc., the holding company of The Savannah Bank. He has served as chief executive officer of The Savannah Bank since 2003, and he served as president from 2002 to 2010. He joined The Savannah Bank in 1994 and has served as vice president, senior vice president, and executive vice president during his tenure there. He is a director of Minis and Company, Inc., a registered investment advisor and subsidiary of The Savannah Bancorp, Inc., and is also a director of Bryan Bank and Trust in Richmond Hill. He also serves on the board of the Georgia Bankers Association.

Member institutions in Maryland re-elected John M. Bond, Jr., director of The Columbia Bank in Columbia to a new four-year term. He has served on the board of directors of The Columbia Bank since 1988 and served as chairman of the board from 2004 to 2009. He served as chief executive officer of The Columbia Bank from 1988 until his retirement in December 2006. From May 2004 until February 2006 when it was acquired by Fulton Financial, he served as chairman and chief executive officer of Columbia Bancorp, the holding company of The Columbia Bank. From 1987 to May 2004, he served as president, chief executive officer, and director of Columbia Bancorp. He also has served as a director of Fulton Financial Corporation since March 2006. He was first elected to the FHLBank Atlanta Board of Directors in 2005.

FHLBank Atlanta also announced that member institutions elected Jonathan Kislak, chairman of the board of Antares Capital Corporation in Miami Shores, to a four-year term as an independent director. Mr. Kislak has served as principal of Antares Capital Corporation since 1999. From 1993 to 2005, he served as president and chairman of the board of Kislak Financial Corporation in Miami Lakes. He was appointed to the FHLBank Atlanta Board of Directors in 2008.

Member institutions elected Henry Gary Pannell, special counsel with Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere and Denegre, LLP, in Atlanta, to a one-year term as an independent director. He has been a member with the law firm since September 2008 and was previously a member with the law firm Miller, Hamilton, Snider & Odom, LLC, in Atlanta since 2001. He served as a trustee with the Atlanta Nehemiah Housing Trust from 2003 through 2009. From 1973 to 2000, he held leadership positions with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Atlanta, including district counsel for the Southeastern District and regional counsel, 6th National Bank Region. He serves on the Board of Advisors of the North Carolina Banking Law Institute. He was appointed to the FHLBank Atlanta Board of Directors in 2008.
