IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 2, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor technology aimed at building a secure, smart, connected world, announced that Space Forum 2011, formerly known as the Actel Space Forum, kicks off today in Los Angeles, California. With more than 100 registered attendees, this invitation-only event has drawn system designers from the country's top manufacturers of space-flight applications. Microsemi is partnering with Aldec, Aeroflex, Mentor Graphics, Synopsys, as well as other divisions within Microsemi to present and discuss advanced design ideas, application expertise and emerging technologies.

Attendees will also get an in-depth briefing on Microsemi's next generation 65nm space-flight FPGAs. Targeted to expand beyond spacecraft bus applications and into payload data processing functions, the new generation builds upon the proven heritage of Microsemi's space-flight FPGAs and unparalleled reliability of the company's reprogrammable, nonvolatile flash-based FPGA technology. Future devices will feature an order of magnitude increase in performance, digital signal processing (DSP) capabilities, support for high speed I/Os and SERDES, plus hardwired interfaces.

"With the increase of scientific, commercial and military applications in the space arena, we see a consistent increase in the number of satellites being built between now and the year 2016," said Russell Garcia, EVP sales and marketing at Microsemi, and GM of the SoC Products Group. "In addition, the increase in electronics within each satellite and the non-negotiable need for reliability and low power makes flash-based FPGAs a natural fit for space-flight applications. We are very committed to this community of designers and look forward to a day filled with insight and education." Garcia is scheduled to present the opening address at the forum, introducing Microsemi Corporation.

Upcoming Space Forum 2011 events will be held in Europe, Russia, India and Japan. Details will be announced at a later date. These customer-events are by invitation only. For more information, please log onto or email newsroom@microsemi.com
