Breaking News, a part of the Msnbc Digital Network, today unveiled a mobile application for iPhone, Android and new Windows 7 devices. The free Breaking News app () combines editorial expertise and the latest technology into a Twitter-like stream of real-time updates, curated around the clock from hundreds of news sources. Consumers can also configure the app to send push alerts for the biggest stories.

The mobile rollout coincides with the relaunch of the Breaking News site (), the fastest source of breaking news on the web. Produced by the same team that powers the popular @breakingnews account on Twitter and the Breaking News Facebook page (), BreakingNews.com features a steady stream of real-time alerts and the ability for users to help “spot” eyewitness accounts on Twitter, YouTube and photo sharing services. Users can also see which stories are “hot” at any given moment, calculated in part by how quickly stories are being shared and clicked on Twitter and Facebook.

“The Breaking News franchise got its start on Twitter,” said Cory Bergman, director of new product development. “We designed BreakingNews.com and the new mobile app to meet the needs of a new breed of news consumer who wants quick, short, shareable updates.”

Sprint is sponsoring the new Breaking News app across all three mobile platforms, as well as BreakingNews.com.

Breaking News recently provided real-time coverage of the midterm election, Chilean miners rescue and the recent rash of East Coast storms, combining real-time aggregation with eyewitness accounts posted on Twitter and YouTube.
