INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 14, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Giving a boost to women who juggle the demands of work, family and school, Harrison College today unveiled the Harrison College Working Mothers Scholarship, a $2,500 award for working moms. The Working Mothers Scholarship is the first scholarship announced as part of Harrison College's new Scholarship program that will award over $500,000 in scholarships in 2011-12.
Announced today at the annual awards luncheon for the Indianapolis chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO-Indianapolis), the scholarship is named in honor of all mothers who balance raising children and working full-time.
"Some of our most dedicated and inspiring students are working moms who dream of something better for themselves and their families," said Dr. Dennis Trinkle, Harrison College's Chief Academic Officer. "We want to help make those dreams come true."
The scholarship benefits women who are working or re-entering the workforce and who have at least one child under the age of 18 living in the home. Recipients will receive $2,500 per year for two or four years, depending on the student's degree program. One scholarship will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the school's online campus, and one to a student studying at one of the college's 13 campuses located across Indiana and in Columbus, Ohio. To qualify, students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and be in good standing with the college.
"Choosing to announce the Marie Curie Scholarship at the NAWBO-Indy awards luncheon shows that Harrison College wants to help women take leadership in the workplace," said Stacy Shew, NAWBO-Indy's Executive Director. "This will make the impossible possible for a woman balancing her roles as mom, breadwinner and student."
Interested students will submit an application, a 500-word essay describing their reasons for pursuing a college degree, and recommendations from a workplace peer and a family member. The award will be presented annually in July for use beginning in the September Quarter. Deadline for applications will be May 30.
Prospective students will find the scholarship application at beginning Jan. 25, 2011.
Harrison College is an Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) accredited institution dedicated to excellence in higher learning.
