WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Dec. 21, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Employee volunteers from Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Navigation Systems Division recently sponsored two events aimed at supporting local families in need during the holiday season.

Northrop Grumman's Adopt-A-Family organization celebrated its 20th year of holiday donations in December by distributing grocery certificates and gifts to 25 disadvantaged families in the local community. Fifteen of the families were nominated by Northrop Grumman employees. The others were selected by El Centro de Amistad, Inc., a non-profit social services agency in Canoga Park, Calif., that supports the needs of low-income residents of the San Fernando Valley. Adopt-A-Family also donated 20 gift certificates to Lutheran Social Services to be distributed to children in need during the holiday season.
The Adopt-A-Family organization holds events at Northrop Grumman's Woodland Hills facility throughout the year to raise funds and encourage employees to volunteer their time in support of the organization's mission to help needy families in the local community. In the 20 years that Adopt-A-Family has been in operation, the program has provided gifts to nearly 750 families and about 2,000 children.
"Supporting local charitable causes is an important part of our company's culture, and an annual tradition as we celebrate the holiday season," said Liz Iversen, sector vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Navigation Systems Division. "We believe it is especially important to volunteer our time and resources during these challenging economic times."
In another effort to reach out to the local community in December, Northrop Grumman's African-American Task Group (AATG), a volunteer employee resource organization, provided holiday gifts to three families facing financial hardship. For the third year in a row, the group's Family Gift Program sought to make a difference in the lives of the families, nominated by Northrop Grumman employee members of AATG, by donating gifts from each family's "wish list." This year, with help from Northrop Grumman's Pride in Diversity Alliance (PrIDA) employee resource group, the donated gifts included clothes, toys, cleaning products and gift cards for groceries and other basic necessities.
AATG and PrIDA are among several Northrop Grumman employee resource groups which operate as volunteer organizations of employees who come together to provide their members with opportunities for networking, community outreach and professional development.
