LAS VEGAS -- LG Electronics took a run today (Jan. 5) at Google TV, introducing a palm-sized set-top box to add real Internet connectivity and apps to any HDTV equipped with an HDMI input.

LG's SmartTV Upgrader offers a Web browser so viewers no longer need to turn on their laptops to access the Internet. With this feature, news, reviews and other content can be viewed on the television screen, as can apps such as Netflix, YouTube and Live Streaming Sports.

Dr. Skott Ahn, LG's chief technology officer, said the company wanted to offer the SmartTV Upgrader for those looking to get Internet apps on their TVs without having to buy a new TV.

"Although we'd love for everyone to buy one of our new smart TVs, we know that may not be possible," Ahn said.

No price for SmartTV Upgrader was mentioned at the event, which opened Press Day at the annual Consumer Electronics Show.

LG's home entertainment lineup also included its motion-controlled Magic Motion Remote with only six buttons; the company’s first portable Blu-ray player; and ultra-light 3-D glasses, priced under $20, that eliminate the need for charging and syncing. LG also announced 31 new LCD HDTV models, of which two-thirds feature LED backlighting and half are equipped with built-in browser and apps.
